Lifelines The Seamen’s Widow and Orphan Association: Empowering Women of Salem, Massachusetts Since 1833 $12.95 Description The story of the Seamen’s Widow and Orphan Association (SWOA) captures the unwavering support of women offering assistance to their neighbors and to the ongoing ebb and flow of life for almost 200 years in Salem, Massachusetts. From its beginning in 1833, when it was created to serve the widows and orphans of men who sailed the seven seas, SWOA has continuously worked behind the scenes to assist women and children left without support. Could the original founders have predicted how far into the future their intentions would reach? SWOA was one of many charitable and moral reform societies and associations that popped up in cities all across the United States. Most have vanished. SWOA has not. This Association has independently and successfully navigated the waves of changing times and today continues to provide its time-tested “friendly visits” and financial assistance—LIFELINES—to help individuals who might otherwise be underserved and overlooked. Lifelines celebrates the long past, the current present and the hoped-for future of the Seamen’s Widow and Orphan Association. The booklet includes 30 photographs and documents from its founding into the 21st century. Printed in 2021 Order a copy of Lifelines now! In lieu of sales, SWOA is taking donations.
